Magic Leap Inc., the once-vaunted augmented reality startup, cut about 75 jobs on Thursday, including its entire sales and marketing departments, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The people said that this spring the Plantation, Florida-based company told employees it was re-organizing to focus less on selling its headsets to business customers, and that it would instead look to license its optics technology — the lenses that allow AR headsets to display digital objects in the real world.
With such market developments the options for see-through AR/MR devices, eg HoloLens and MagicLeap, is once more becoming smaller. Hopefully it will stay alive to some extent, and pick up as the utility of those devices becomes better understood and accepted.
